Location Innovation Hub (LIH)

The Location Innovation Hub is a competence center led by the National Land Survey of Finland’s Geospatial Center, focused on the development of innovations related to location and geospatial data. The Location Innovation Hub provides services to startup and small-medium enterprises in the sector, public sector data producers, and client organizations utilizing geospatial solutions. The competence center helps businesses grow by leveraging location and geospatial data and also serves public sector organizations.

The Location Innovation Hub is part of the European network of over 150 innovation hubs, EDIH (European Digital Innovation Hub). It is one of the four EDIH hubs in Finland, with its funding mainly provided by the European Union and Business Finland.

EDIH hubs offer services to client companies and organizations to help them develop their digital readiness and enhance their business and/or service operations. As the name suggests, the Location Innovation Hub focuses on geospatial development services on various themes such as the built environment, agriculture and forestry, health and well-being, and next-generation navigation services. The hub involves 24 member companies and organizations in the LIH consortium, along with numerous partner organizations.

The Innovation Foundation is a partner in the Location Innovation Hub, providing necessary knowledge and expertise to optimize operations in the geospatial sector, including from the following areas:

  • Training and materials related to intangible rights of geospatial data
  • Information on innovation and development funding opportunities
  • Personalized advice on business development, funding, and Intellectual Property (IP) topics

Connection to the development of the Ideajalostamo™ service

The Location Innovation Hub supports the development of the Ideajalostamo™ service model, particularly in three thematic areas:

  1. In the LIH project, a service model is being developed to offer expert knowledge tailored to the needs of startups and SMEs. The testing of this model in the project also lays the foundation for its future use and further development.
  2. The project creates extensive connections to Finland’s and Europe’s EDIH networks, which can be used in the future to produce expertise for Ideajalostamo™ services and leverage service resources in the development of Finnish inventions.
  3. The project begins mapping innovation funding opportunities and disseminating information about funding possibilities. This mapping forms the basis for creating a broader service that will present funding opportunities as part of the Ideajalostamo™ solution.

The Location Innovation Hub project duration is from 1st January 2023 to 31st December 2025. The total value of the project is 3 million euros, and the Keksintösäätiö budget is 28,890 euros.
